Mission Trails Regional Park encompasses nearly 5,800 acres
of both natural and developed recreational acres.
Its rugged hills, valleys and open areas represent a San Diego
prior to the landing of Cabrillo in San Diego Bay in 1542.

The Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve (SMER) is as
field station of the California State Universities administered
by San Diego State University (SDSU). SMER is one of four
SDSU Field Stations. The other three SDSU Field Stations are:
Fortuna Mountain Research Reserve (FMRR),
Sky Oaks Field Station (SOFS), and the Tijuana River National Estuarine
Research Reserve/Auxiliary Field Station.
The reserves are dedicated to teaching and research in the field sciences.
